Is your online presence working?

Nineteen yes/no questions across the two jobs of your online presence: how people discover you (Google Business Profile, reviews, social platforms) and what happens when they land (does the website do its job, is there a clear next step, do enquiries get answered, does the stack pay for itself). Ten minutes to complete. Score at the bottom, interpretation and next steps on the reverse.

How to score. Tick Yes (2 pts) if you are confident this is in place and working. Tick Not sure (1 pt) if you think so but haven't checked lately, or if it is true for some channels and not others. Tick No (0 pts) if you know this is not currently the case.

01Google Business Profile 3 questions

1.1
Your Google Business Profile is claimed and verified, and your primary category accurately reflects what you do. This is where most local discovery starts.
1.2
Business hours, service area, phone number, website URL, and cover photo are all current on your GBP. Nothing has drifted since you first set it up.
1.3
Fresh photos have been added in the last 90 days, and you post updates monthly (offers, services, events, news). GBP rewards businesses that show recency.

02Reviews & reputation 3 questions

2.1
New reviews arrive consistently. You have a system to invite happy customers to leave a review (email, SMS, QR code, follow-up), so reviews arrive by design rather than by chance.
2.2
Every review, positive and negative, receives a response from you within 7 days. Silence on reviews is a signal to future customers who are deciding whether to enquire.
2.3
Your Google rating sits at 4.5 stars or above, recent reviews are visible in the last 90 days, and any 1-2 star reviews have been addressed publicly and constructively.

03Social media presence & engagement 3 questions

3.1
You have an active presence on the one or two social platforms where your customers actually spend time (Facebook for local, Instagram for visual, LinkedIn for B2B). You are not spread thin across every platform.
3.2
Your business profile on each platform is complete and consistent with your website and GBP: same name, contact details, service area, real logo and cover, current bio.
3.3
You post at least weekly on your primary platform, and messages or DMs receive a reply within one business day. Silent profiles read as "closed for business".

04Website function 4 questions

4.1
Your website enables the primary action a customer actually needs to take (book an appointment, request a quote, buy a product, get service information). The site is a working tool, not a static brochure describing you.
4.2
Enquiries submitted through your website reliably reach you and get a response within one business day. You have tested this recently by submitting one yourself from a device you do not normally use.
4.3
The content matches what you actually do today. Retired services are removed, current pricing structure is reflected, team page is current, and nothing in the footer is more than 12 months out of date.
4.4
The website answers the top 3 questions a prospect asks on the first phone call (price or pricing model, timing, what is included). If you answer the same questions daily, they belong on the site.

05Visitor to enquiry 3 questions

5.1
Your homepage tells a first-time visitor, in five seconds, what you do, who you help, and where you are. The top of the page alone is enough for them to know whether they are in the right place.
5.2
Every page has one obvious next step: a tap-to-call button on mobile, a booking link, a contact form. No dead-end pages. Contact details appear on every page, not tucked away on the Contact page.
5.3
Trust signals are present: real photos of your business and team, a real address, testimonials or embedded reviews, and any relevant credentials or licences. Not entirely stock imagery or generic mission-statement filler.

06Response & running costs 3 questions

6.1
Enquiries from every channel (website form, GBP messages, Facebook messages, Instagram DMs, email, phone) land somewhere that a real person checks daily. Nothing is going into a mailbox no one watches.
6.2
Every enquiry receives a response, even if the answer is "we cannot help with that, but here is who can". No ghosting. Every enquiry ignored is a review or word-of-mouth referral you are losing.
6.3
You know what your web presence costs to run each month (hosting, domain, CMS, social scheduler, email marketing, review platforms, chat widgets), and every subscription earns its keep in enquiries, engagement, or time saved.

What your score means

Findable, trusted, converting 30 to 38

Your discovery-to-conversion pipeline is doing real work. Locals find you across the channels they actually use, they trust what they see, and there is a clear next step waiting when they land. The next tier is usually competitive positioning: outperforming the two or three specific competitors chasing the same local searches, and squeezing more conversion out of the visitors you already attract.

Present, leaking opportunity 16 to 29

You are visible, but attention is not turning into enquiries at the rate it could be. Common leaks at this level: an out-of-date GBP, silent social profiles, a website that describes what you do but does not tell the visitor what to do next, an enquiry channel that goes unread for days, or a stack of subscriptions no one has audited in a year. Individual fixes are usually small and cheap. The compounding effect on new business is significant.

Invisible where locals search 0 to 15

Locals looking for what you do are finding your competitors first, or landing on a presence that does not convert. This is not a judgement, it is a common starting point for a small business that grew on word of mouth and referrals. The good news: because most small competitors have not done this work either, GBP hygiene, one active social channel, and a website that actually does its job give outsized returns within the first months of a project.

Wherever you scored, do these three things this month

  1. Baseline your findability. Search "[your service] [your suburb]" in an incognito browser. Note where you rank in the map pack and the organic results. Repeat the same search monthly and watch the number move.
  2. Test your own enquiry flow. Submit a message through your website's contact form AND send a DM to your primary social account, from a phone you do not normally use. Time how long the response takes, and check whether it arrived at all.
  3. Ask three recent happy customers for a Google review this week. Personally, by name, with a direct link. Do not batch it into a generic email. Reviews compound: each one lifts the next.
